Yes, yes, we know: your dad is clearly the best dad ever. But who’s your favorite fictional daddy?

You know the one: he says just the right thing at just the right time. He’s stern but loving, kind yet wise. He makes you laugh after you’ve scuffed your knee and buys you ice cream just when you need it (even if you’re 42). He also hugs very well and lends you copious amounts of money with no strings attached.

This Father’s Day, Why Let Dad Foot the Bill

Here at the Doozy headquarters, we are polishing your Father’s Day ecards vigorously for this Sunday. We are aware that some people still use that antiquated technology to reach their fathers on the big day: the telephone. Then we heard something about telephones and Father’s Day that we thought just had to be an urban myth of some sort…but alas, it’s true:

More collect phone calls are made on Father’s Day than on any other day of the year.

Oh poor Dad…why?

According to Snopes:

Dr. Brenda Wall, a family psychologist in Dallas, Texas, postulates, “We have a different sociological response to our parents that is gender and role-related. We’ve always looked to mom for love and nurturing. But when we look to dad, it’s usually a business transaction or something that relates to power, positioning, or money.”

We tried to think of a few possible collect call scenarios:

“This is a collect call from John Smith to John Smith, Sr. Will you accept the charges?”

“Yes.”

“Dad. Hi. Just wanted to wish you a Happy Father’s Day. I was going to buy you a nice gift, I swear. But the strangest thing happened. I saw this nun crying by the side of the road. I pulled over to see if I could help. Apparently her convent had burned down last night and she had nowhere to live! What was I to do? I put her up in a hotel (along with her kitten, St. Fuzzy) and now I’m flat broke until my next paycheck. Anyway, Happy Father’s Day, Dad.”

Or maybe:

“This is a collect call from John Smith to John Smith, Sr. Will you accept the charges?”

“Yes.”

“Dad. Hi. Just wanted to wish you a Happy Father’s Day. I was going to buy you a nice gift, I swear. But the strangest thing happened. My money disappeared. I mean, right before my very eyes. I went to this magic show and the magician asked me for my wallet. He did this abracadabra thing and boom! My wallet was gone. Conveniently he did his disappearing act right after that. Obviously a shyster of some sort. Anyway, Happy Father’s Day, Dad.”

World Premier of our new Father’s Day ecard: The Country Singing Steak

I don’t know about you, but the dads at Doozy are BIG on barbeque. They have very specific rules on how to barbeque and will generally not let you touch the grill, unless you’ve had years of hands-on training. Of course, the end result is deliciousness, so we dutifully let them rule the grill like a backyard king.

So our latest Father’s Day e-card is in dedication to all of the barbequing dads out there. It was designed by our animator Tom (who has worked with Adam Sandler on several

animation projects). The song lyrics were composed by Mukti Garceau (our resident lyricist and poet) and the script was written by myself (creative director, Bennett Schneider).

Here are some quick barbeque tips, relayed to you by some of our dads:

  •  Clean grills make for better food. Removing old ashes and food help with better overall circulation and the taste of the food.
  •  Turn chicken every 5 minutes. Chicken can be tricky. So rotate is consistently to ensure its done and it doesn’t blister.
  •  To reduce over browning, wait to apply barbeque sauce. Most marinate their meat and chicken in the sauce but one dad suggests waiting to apply barbeque sauce until the last two minutes to avoid over-browning. Sure you can marinate ahead of time, just wait to apply sauce.
  •  Jazz up your burger. There are a lot of fun ingredients you can add to your burger for a different twist: pine nuts, fresh herbs, minced garlic, jalapeno peppers, minced onion, feta cheese, wild rice…even cranberries!
  •  Don’t leave your barbeque! One dad swears by this. “Barbeques are not ovens where you can walk away for ten or fifteen minutes. Barbeques need to be monitored. Things can change really quickly!”

The Worst Father’s Day Gifts… Ever

When it comes to Father’s Day, it’s easy to resort to buying those same old gifts year after year. “But I don’t know what to give him!” you say. (This is said in a whiny voice, by the way.)

So you wait and hem and haw and soon, it’s the big day…and you have the following Father’s Day Gifts in hand:

  1. Cufflinks. Ah yes, the dreaded cufflinks. Unless your dad frequents ballrooms or conducts orchestras, they will undoubtedly sit on a dusty shelf somewhere, waiting for the next family wedding.
  2. Ties. A Father’s Day “favorite” for years. A tie may evoke a weak “Oh…wow,” but then it will hang on a rack with the last 15 ties he’s received for Father’s Day.
  3. A Swiss Army knife. A great present, for sure…if your father has to survive in the woods for an extended period of time.
  4. Socks. Wow. That’s the equivalent of getting Mom a vacuum cleaner for Mother’s Day and asking her to get busy. Socks give dull a whole new meaning.
  5. A Card. Oh boy, a boring greeting card that doesn’t do anything but sit on dad’s desk.  Really?  Why not send him some funny Father’s Day eCards?

Consider this, Dad’s like to laugh, right?  Well, why send a regular paper card with a still image of some old car, when you can send a hilarious Father’s Day eCard with a singing and dancing steak backed by a band of ZZ Top hot dogs?

The Father of Father’s Day – A True Story

Here’s why we are so excited about Father’s Day eCards.

It’s that time of year again, where we pause and give thanks to that special man of the house. However you decide to thank him for his tireless fatherly duties, start with an entertaining, sure-to-bring-a-smile-to-his-face Father’s Day e-cards. Our free Father’s Day e-cards start the day off right.

Did you know how Father’s Day came to be? It’s a sweet story:

In 1909, Sonora Dodd first came up with the idea of Father’s Day while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon.

Sonora’s father, William Smart, was a Civil War veteran. His wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. He tirelessly raised his clan singlehandedly on a farm in Washington.

When Sonora grew up, she reflected on the courage, love and selflessness it took her father to raise her family. She decided a day should be made to honor wonderful fathers such as hers.

She held the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane on June 19, 1910 (her father’s birthday).

In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father’s Day. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed the law.
